The narration is laughing at the moment, but Simeon just looks frightened. "God, no," he says a bit too quickly. He doesn't mean anything by it, but he's well past 80 and she hardly looks 8. Okay, at least sixteen, but can't be more than that.

"I'm sorry. I didn't mean anything by it."
